We have volunteer and paid positions available for the summer 2026 season!

South Pass City is an old gold mining town from the 1860s. We have over 40 historic buildings we preserve and interpret. Varying from a hotel, general store, saloons, and gold mill with operating equipment!

South Pass City State Historic Site is looking for couples or singles who want to spend their summer in Wyoming! We are located at 8000 feet in central Wyoming, nestled between Wyoming's Red Desert and the Wind River Mountain Range. The nearest town is Lander, Wy and is 35 miles away.  We are the perfect place for those wanting to get away from the crowds but keep some modern comforts!

We are a part of the Wyoming State Parks and Historic Sites and work closely with the non-profit, Friends of South Pass City. We are able to give tours of the Carissa Mill and English Tunnel as well as maintaining and interpreting the townsite with a combination of volunteers and paid seasonal employees.

Paid
Positions

Paid positions work 40 hours/week at $10.00-$16.00 per hour, depending on experience. We have maintenance and interpretive positions available.

Maintenance positions involve janitorial work, painting, maintaining historic and modern buildings, as well as assisting with the gift shop and public/school tours when needed.

Interpretive positions involve giving public and school tours, historic research, janitorial work, and assisting with the gift shop and maintenance tasks when needed.

Volunteer
Positions

Volunteer positions work 24 hours/week. No pay is available for volunteer positions. We are looking for one gift shop/front desk volunteer and two volunteers to provide interpretation in historic buildings and help out with school tours when needed.

Our Gift Shop Clerk greets visitors and  orients them to the Historic Site. They also  collect day use fees from visitors, run the cash register, and stock gift shop items when needed.

Interpretive volunteers are stationed in buildings on the site to give visitors a hands on experience. The Smith-Sherlock Company Store allows people to step back in time and use a rotary phone, grind coffee, and experience shopping in the original supermarket! The Miner's Exchange Saloon invites people to play a game of billiards and enjoy a cold sarsaparilla.
